As the world of nursing evolves to accommodate care needs in supportive living, primary care networks, community, and other continuing health care streams, there is a growing need for Licensed Practical Nurses to demonstrate exceptional leadership skills. LPNs are asked to perform to the full scope of practice which includes taking on supervisory and management roles within the healthcare team. Not only does this require clinical skills which show emotional intelligence, critical thinking aptitude, and a collaborative practice approach, but also the ability to successfully run the team under your supervision in collaboration with other managers, administrators, physicians, and nurse practitioners.

This course, tailored specifically to the LPN scope of practice, will provide you with the resources you require to elevate your performance as a competent supervisor and an exceptional leader. It may also distinguish your resume from others when applying for positions. Whether you want to run a doctor’s office, a unit/neighborhood in a supportive living facility or the whole facility with hundreds of employees, supervisory and leadership skills are the keys that open those doors for you.

Course structure

The structure of this 12-week guided theory course is divided into 4 units that focus not only on developing leadership skills but also on how to supervise/manage the people on your team within the scope of practice for LPNs.

The course begins with an introduction to leadership by exploring the main elements of a successful organization or business operation, including leadership and employee excellence, exceptional patient or client-centered experience, and customer service with sustainable results. We’ll focus on fundamental concepts in hiring, orientation, point-of-care training, communication, and care of your team. We investigate the differences between leadership, supervision, and management. We’ll discuss the process of decision-making in a variety of leadership settings including the development and strengthening of critical thinking skills. You will study the processes of leading independently, or without direct authority. We’ll also cover human resources and labor standards insights, managing/supervising groups and teams, and how to manage conflict resolution and performance improvement.
