Become a nurse foot health care specialist

Are you a nurse working in community, diabetic, renal, or senior health care and seeing an ever-increasing need for better lower limb and foot health care that is within the nursing scope of practice? Are you a creative RN, RPN, or LPN interested in broadening your horizons into your own business as a foot health provider? Are you already a foot care nurse seeking to up-skill your current foot care practice?

As the world population ages, lower limb and foot complications from diabetes and the peripheral vascular disease continues to grow. The call for nurses trained in expert medical foot and nail health is critical and ever-increasing to assess, prevent, treat, teach and advocate for clients and patients at risk. In fact, it is our belief that every nurse should study lower limb and foot health as a required part of their professional development.

Opportunity is knocking at the door for you to make a difference and be on the leading edge of change!

Part 2: Foot Health Nurse Practical Applications (FNIP002)

This *6-8-day course is specifically for nurses who have completed FNIT001. It is offered to Canadian and American nurses at collaborating colleges or designated venues, combining both skill-building and practicum. Nurses attend class in person.

Section A is taught in the form of skill-building labs in a classroom setting to a maximum of 16 students attending. Labs include basic to advanced foot care practice training, including electronic filing, sterilization of tools training to surgical suite standard, forefoot comfort solutions, and wound, and product-picker training. Practical applications for in-depth assessment of the lower limb and foot, lower limb, foot massage, and preparation for practicum are also included. The course is facilitated by a Registered Nurse with additional specialist educators also providing instruction and presentations.

Section B is a full *3-5-day clinical practicum with real clients in collaboration with various local organizations. The practical applications week prepares the student to sit the WOCNCB (US) foot care exam and to offer best practices for safe and effective, evidence-based foot care management.

Each student is introduced to and trained in the use of all lower limb care tools required for practice (manual and electronic). There is a required pre-practicum study. The clinical practicum ensures that each student has the opportunity to treat a variety of foot care issues under supervision and become familiar with the running of a foot care clinic or community-based private practice.

  • Days 4 & 5 of the clinical practicum are optional

Students must complete part 2 within 12 months of commencing Part 1. Part 2 is currently offered in Calgary. N.B. Other options may become available post-pandemic. Must be a professional nurse with a current license to complete this course.
